Like an eagle’s nest, this impressive fortress stands tall upon the rocky peak overlooking the Alsatian vineyards. Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle was built in the 12th century before being laid siege to, pillaged and burned during the Thirty Years’ War. However, the restoration work ordered by Emperor Guillaume II in the 19th century returned the castle to its former glory. Behind its 270m-long ramparts, you will discover a meticulously reconstructed interior that offers a glimpse into the daily lives of lords in the Middle Ages. During your visit, you can also enjoy stunning lookouts with views of the Alsace plains and vineyards. These alone are worth the climb up to the castle.
