Perched fortresses

Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg

A veritable eagle’s nest, this impressive fortress stands atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the Alsace vineyards. Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle was built in the 12th century before being besieged, looted and burned during the 30 Years’ War.

Restoration work commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the 19th century has restored it to its former glory. Behind its 270-meter-long walls, you’ll discover a carefully reconstructed interior that lets you imagine what daily life was like for the lords of the Middle Ages. During your visit, you’ll also enjoy superb views over the Alsace plain and its vineyards. They alone would justify the climb up to the castle.
