It’s hard not to fall under Colmar’s spell. Sitting in the heart of Alsace’s vineyards, the town is a genuine condensed version of Alsace with its delightful half-timbered houses. In winter, the floral balconies give way to twinkling lights illuminating Christmas markets where you can sample Alsatian specialty dishes. The Unterlinden Museum is one of the most stunning in France and includes the Issenheim altarpiece, a genuine masterpiece of mediaeval art. The Route des Vins (Route of Wines) winds amongst charming Alsatian villages such as Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Eguisheim and Ribeauvillé.
